New for your 2011 tax return:

Volunteer firefighters enjoy a $1000 exemption on their firefighting income. Now, qualifying firefighters have the option to include that $1000 in income and claim a credit of $3000 on Schedule 1.

A new Children’s Arts Tax Credit allows parents to deduct a portion of the cost of an artistic or cultural program. This includes dance, music, writing, theatre, language, and instruction on customs and culture.

Starting January 1, 2012, Workers aged 60 to 64 inclusive must make CPP contributions on their earnings while receiving benefits.

Support the Sunshine Coast Food Bank

Between February 1 and April 30, Roxanne is offering a discount on her tax preparation fees to anyone who brings in a donation for the Food Bank.

Food Banks rely on the generosity of local individuals and businesses to help feed our neighbours in these difficult economic times. All donations stay in our community, benefitting local families.

Among the most needed items are peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, canned fish and meats, tetra boxed juices, canned fruit and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, rice, and personal care products such as soap, shampoo, toilet paper, and feminine hygiene products.

Thank you to all of our clients who have helped us support the Sunshine Coast Food Bank in the past, and all those who plan to help this year.

Employment Insurance Measures for Self-Employed People

Service Canada has posted a FAQ on the topic of the new EI program for self-employed people. I have read it over, and analyzed the information. Find out what benefits are available and what other options available.

Bookkeeping Services

Roxanne has just completed a one-year program at Capilano University in North Vancouver. This program bestows upon her an Accounting Assistant Certificate.

This Certification enables Roxanne to do manual and computerized accounting for small business. The program has given Roxanne experience in Simply Accounting, QuickBooks, and Accpac, with emphasis on Simply Accounting.

These new skills, combined with more than 10 years' experience preparing income tax returns for proprietors, make Roxanne Haddrell Personal Tax Service a one-stop location for all of your accounting needs. If you already have an accountant looking after your income taxes, Roxanne is available to take care of your day-to-day bookkeeping needs.

Whether you need monthly bookkeeping services to stay up-to-date on how your business is doing, or quarterly service at GST/HST filing times, Roxanne is ready to help!

CRA Reduces Record-keeping Burden for Motor Vehicle Use

For years, small business owners have been required to keep detailed trip logs to back-up their claim for motor vehicle use. Now, the CRA will allow a simplified method of calculating business use of vehicles.

After keeping a detailed trip log for one full year, the CRA will allow small business owners to keep a sample 3-month log in subsequent years. As long as this 3-month sample is within 10% of the previous years' business usage, no further logs will be required for the year.

Business owners must still keep all expense receipts for the year, which is easily done by keeping an envelope in the glove box of the vehicle. This simplified vehicle log method will save the small business owner time, allowing him or her to concentrate on business rather than on remembering to record mileage.

Tax Relief: Temporary 100-Per-Cent Capital Cost Allowance Rate for Computers

As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, new computers purchased between January 27, 2009 and February 1, 2011 are eligible to be fully expensed. The current rule allows only a 55% depreciation rate on computers. The ability to deduct the full cost of a new computer in the year of purchase will enable business owners to reduce their taxable income for the year.

Filing Deadlines

The deadline for filing your 2010 tax return was Monday, May 2. If you or your spouse has self-employment income, you have to file by Wednesday, June 15. However, if you have any taxes owing, you must still pay them by April 30 to avoid interest charges.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires all employers to have T4 slips in the mail by February 28, so if you have not received yours yet, it is time to take steps to get it. More information on how to file with a missing T4 slip.

Tax Free Savings Account

Have you set up your Tax Free Savings Account yet? All Canadian residents aged 18 and over should make an appointment with their financial advisor to set one up. You will need your SIN and proof of birthdate (birth certificate or drivers license).
